Air Handler

Definition: The indoor unit of an HVAC system that circulates air throughout your home via ductwork.

An air handler is the indoor component of your HVAC system that moves conditioned air throughout your home. It works with your outdoor unit (condenser or heat pump) to heat and cool your space.

Components of an Air Handler:

  • Blower motor: Fan that pushes air through ducts
  • Evaporator coil: Absorbs heat from indoor air
  • Air filter: Removes dust and particles
  • Heating element: Electric heat strips (in some units)
  • Drain pan: Collects condensation

    How It Works:

1. Return ducts bring air from your home 2. Air passes through the filter 3. Air flows over the evaporator coil (cooling) or heating element 4. Blower pushes conditioned air through supply ducts 5. Air reaches each room through vents

Location: Typically found in:

  • Attic
  • Basement
  • Utility closet
  • Garage

    Maintenance:

  • Replace air filter monthly (or as recommended)
  • Keep area around unit clear
  • Check drain line for clogs
  • Professional inspection annually

    Signs of Problems:

  • Weak airflow
  • Strange noises
  • Water leaks around unit
  • Inconsistent temperatures
  • Higher energy bills
